AT LONG LAST.

The SHOWS page has finally been updated, with the latest dates, past dates, commentaries, you name it. Phew.

Also - here is a nice little write-up from the Hoboken show earlier this month. Thanks again, Jim!

NEW BUTTON!

See that new button next to the Contact button? That's the link to the new composer section of this site. Jeff moonlights as a TV/film composer, so this page will serve all those "industry types" that want to "hire" Jeff to "write" for their "movie or whatever." Take a listen!

WHOA, WHAT HAPPENED?

The new Elephant Larry show (which features an all-original electronica-ish soundtrack by Jeff!) is what happened, hence the lack of updates here over the last few weeks. Much apologies. But now we're back! And, if ya didn't already know, there's a big show happening on Monday the 22nd at Crash Mansion. And you should be there.

THANK YOU, DELI!

Thanks so much to the staff of NY's Deli Magazine, a truly great (and free!) indie music journal that was kind enough to review "Around the Square" in its winter issue. The review is only available in the magazine's print version, so until we get our scanner workin', here's a transcription*:

Around the Square
by Rachel Rokicki

A classically trained Romanian who plays the piano, baritone ukulele, and saxophone brings his rich music to the NYC area and beyond in his first independently released collection of songs titled, "Around the Square." Jeff, who began running his fingers across a piano at the age of four, went on to study saxophone at Cornell under Pulitzer Prize winner Steven Stucky's guidance. During this time he's perfected his singer/songwriter skills - his sound is a cross between a younger, less perfected Elvis Costello and Rufus Wainwright - but his talent will most assuredly bloom. On this EP, Jeff collaborated with Andrew Felluss, who has worked with the Neptunes as well as other upcoming artists, to create such gems as "Am I still?" and "Like Yesterday." A man of many talents, Jeff, also happens to co-found the comedy group 'Elephant Larry' who play at music venues around the city. Jeff's warm casual sound makes a nice companion you can relax to.

*Transcription is verbatim; no wordings have been changed.

Once again, thanks.

DROWNED IN SOUND

"Around the Square" was reviewed in the excellent British music 'zine Drowned in Sound this week! The review (also dl-able at the PRESS page) likens the songs to works by Andrew Bird and Rufus Wainwright, and it includes some great phrases, such as the following:

Around The Square is a promising collection of songs that display an impressive amount of weight considering most of them are centred around an instrument that weighs about as much an apple.

Tee hee. Thanks very much, DiS!

August 23, 2005

Holy cow. "Around the Square" got shouted out on 3 blogs this week! Baskerville's Syndrome is a great new music blog and it's an honor to be among its first subjects. "B's S" is curated by Jez Burrows, a music critic who's also written some great spots for McSweeney's, like this one.

And in the ukulele interest world, Uke Club and Ukulelia somehow discovered this site on the same day. How serendipitous! Thanks to all for the nice mentions. For quick jump-to-Jeff versions of these articles, click here, here and here!

REVIEW #2

Some songs from "Around the Square" have been submitted to VH1's Song of the Year competition (which is actually a monthly competition; hmmm...). Though the winners haven't been announced yet, the song critiques have come back, complete with near-scientific numerical scores for 10 different categories per song! Here's a highlight from the review of "Temporary Song":

The music has a strong appeal that the listener won't be able to get enough of. [The] vocals are soulful and beautiful! The melodies are outstanding.
Overall Score: 94/100

Wow. Thanks! Extended info on the VH1 critiques will be located on the press page, coming soon.

REVIEW #1

Jonathan L, a popular DJ from L.A. & Phoenix, has been nice enough to include a capsule review of "Around the Square" at the top of his website's "Featured Independents" section! From JLradio.com:

What begins as a loosely based Alt/Folk song on track one of a 6-song EP, progresses into a delightful jazz light fusion arena. Jeff writes all the material and arranges the songs. This Manhattan boy can sure sing. Almost reminds of a *Burt Bacharach/ Jonathan Richman style of crooning at times, as crazy as that might sound. One of the strongest points is Solomon doesn't sound forced, to the contrary, quite natural. The KCRW's of the world should be all over this. *The Bacharach reference is probably more for Jeff's arragements skill.

Thanks so much to jlradio for the kind words! Click HERE to see the review in its native habitat.

Now that the first official review has come in, we'll be launching a little press section for this site in the immediate future. Stay tuned.

April 19, 2005
Announcing the official release of Jeff's brand-new E.P.!

"JEFF SOLOMON : AROUND THE SQUARE"

This 6-song EP recording is a groundbreaking performance for Jeff Solomon, as well as engineer/producer Andrew Felluss. Andrew is a talented Manhattan-based pro who has spent years picking up tips while working with producing legends like Phil Ramone and Frank Filipetti. He's racked up engineering credits on projects with the Neptunes, Paul Simon, Jay-Z, Peter Cincotti, Carly Simon, Renee Fleming, Mary J. Blige, Rod Stewart, as well as last year's multi-Grammy winner, Ray Charles's "Genius Loves Company".

Online sales will be operational and linked to this site within the next two weeks. Plus, you'll soon be able to stream the record in its entirety, free of charge! Check back very soon for the Jeff Solomon Media Player (yes, that sounds ridiculous to us, too).

More about the record:

To create a new sound for "Around the Square," Jeff recruited an excellent band made up of the most talented musical friends he's made over the last few years. Joining Jeff on "Around the Square" are Brian Letiecq (guitar), Steve Lucas (bass), and Doug Clark (drums), along with guest trombonist Chris Erway and guest cellist Vivian Israel.

The full band sound adds some surprising new layers to these songs, and Jeff can't wait to bring this new sound to the stage. A release party and live performance is being planned for the very near future. And for those of you that became used to Jeff hopping around stage, switching instruments for every song, there's no need to worry; Jeff played piano, synths, organ, 3 different kinds of ukuleles, saxophone, clarinet, and bongos on this record, and he also recorded all his own backup vocals. Even with a great new band behind him, he still likes to keep his sounds changing constantly.

Say hello to the MASSIVE UPDATE!

At long last, this site is undergoing a complete information overhaul. We've always had great feedback on the look of the site, so that won't change much. But the information on every page will be completely different, reflecting the arrival of Jeff's first proper E.P., "Around the Square." Release details coming soon. So start checking the site frequently again, because things are a-changin'. New pages for the BIO and SHOWS sections are already up. Check 'em out!
